GREEN — People lined up in the hallways at Green High School Nov. 17 for the H1N1 influenza vaccines, as pictured at right top. Free vaccines were administered to 1,125 people by the Summit County Health District, according to Marlene Martin, assistant public information officer, who said the average wait was about 35 minutes.

“This is the best-known protection we have at this point, and it offers almost 100 percent protection with minimal side effects,” said Martin, who added everyone should get the vaccine, regardless if they have contracted H1N1 earlier.

After waiting in line and completing forms, public health nurses administered the vaccines to participants. The vaccines were offered to those at the highest risk of developing complications from the flu, said Therese DeLucia, Green Local Schools district nurse.

“It was unbelievable how they [the Health District] were able to get such a large space coordinated and provide such an important service. It was just phenomenal and couldn’t have gone any better,” she said.

H1N1 clinics also have been held in Manchester and Springfield schools, and a clinic is scheduled to take place at Coventry High School Dec. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.summitflu.org.
