COPLEY — Joseph Zbasnik, a junior at Copley High School, earned the rank of Eagle Scout Dec. 20 by completing a project at Hale Farm & Village in Bath.

Joseph’s Eagle Scout service project was building and installing benches on the nature trail at Hale Farm & Village. Along the wooded trail, Hale Farm instructors often use the amphitheater for presentations, but students and guests would have to stand or sit on whatever logs were available, according to Joseph’s mother, Mary Zbasnik.

Joseph lead members of Boy Scout Troop No. 390 in cutting utility poles for the post legs, preparing planks from the Hale Farm saw mill for the seats and sanding, drilling, assembling and weather-coating the wood to make eight guest benches and one instructor bench. More than 20 boys and adults helped with the project, which included hauling the heavy benches over the rugged trail back to the site and installing and leveling them.

Joseph’s trail to becoming an Eagle Scout started as a Cub Scout in Pack No. 3300 at Fort Island Primary School under then-Den Leader Paul Orchosky, who is now the Troop Committee chairman for Troop No. 390, according to Mary Zbasnik.

In addition to earning merit badges, becoming an Eagle Scout requires active participation in the community and demonstration of leadership, especially in sharing skills with younger Scouts. Joseph has participated in Old Portage District Scouts in Government Days, Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day celebrations and has helped clean up after various community group rummage sales. He has been an assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, troop scribe and troop guide. He has earned both the Ad Altari Dei and Pope Pius XII Catholic Boy Scout religious emblems. He also has been on staff for Cub Scout Day Camp and helps with Pack No. 3300’s annual Pinewood Derby, according to Mary Zbasnik.

A member of the St. Hilary Catholic Church Youth Group, Joseph plans to attend the 100th anniversary of Scouting in America, National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia this summer.

At Copley High School, Joseph is a member of the Key Club, cross country and track teams, and plays trombone in the marching, concert and pep bands.

According to Mary Zbasnik, Faith Lutheran Church has chartered Troop No. 390, led by Scoutmaster Jim Horvath, with many activities.

The annual spaghetti dinner fund-raiser will be March 6 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the church Fellowship Hall, 2726 W. Market St.
