DOWNTOWN AKRON — Akron Public Schools (APS) will showcase the district’s unique programs and successes at the kick-off event of APS PROUD May 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lock 3 Park, located at 200 S. Main St.

The entire community is invited for a night of food, games and entertainment, including student performances and a special performance by local artist B.E. Mann. Participants also may try their luck at dunking APS Treasurer Jack Pierson, Assistant Superintendent Ellen McWilliams and other APS officials.

Attendees are invited to share what makes them APS PROUD on camera for a chance to win a new iPad, iPod Nano or Powerbeats sports headphones, according to APS officials.

The event is sponsored by the city of Akron, APS Business Advisory Council, GAMETRUCK® Neo and The Wheels for Education/LeBron James Family Foundation.

GRANGER — Granger Elementary Principal Linda Collins will retire this year after 37 years in education.

“It’s time to hand over the reins and let someone else enjoy being a part of one of the best schools in the state,” she said.

Collins said being the principal has been a privilege because of the wonderful students, families and staff. Her last day with students will be June 6, when she will participate in the school’s end-of-year carnival.

Upon her retirement, Collins requested instead of gifts or a farewell party, Granger families and the community help her fill her office full of stuffed animals and baby blankets to be donated to Akron Children’s Hospital and the Aultman Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, both of which have been important to her, according to school officials.

Donations are being accepted at her office at any time. For details, contact Heather Murray at 330-725-1588 or heather3d@aol.com.
