AKRON — A-minus, a local hip-hop artist, appeared at Hope Academy University’s second annual “A New Way” Youth Mentoring Showcase May 31. Some of the students participating in the event, which was sponsored by Hope Academy University/Alien Nation/A New Way Project, are pictured at right.

The A New Way Youth Mentoring Showcase is an outlet for kindergarten through 12th-grade students to promote positivity through rap, song, cheer, dance and poetry, according to event organizers. A-minus was accompanied by Darrita Davis, president of the Stop the Violence Akron Movement, who talked to students about crime in Akron.

Nikita Tidwell, a third-grade teacher at Hope Academy University, co-hosted and coordinated the showcase.

Akron Aeros’ ticket sales representative TJ Carolin, along with mascot Orbit, kicked off the event by visiting the classrooms and getting the students pumped up for the showcase, according to organizers.
