Revere board discusses paving projects
The Revere Local Schools Board of Education approved change orders for the summer paving projects taking place at district building parking lots during the July 17 meeting.
Kevin Matowitz, director of business services, explained that additional funding was needed from contingency funds set aside to address some issues that were found when contractors began the jobs this summer.
“There’s a lot of unknowns under that soil,” Matowitz told the board.
He said the areas from the front circle at the middle school to the back of the high school have been excavated, back filled and milled with new blacktop. The administration building and areas in the stadium lot have also been started, Matowitz added.
Undercutting, which is the removal of pavement due to soft soil identified, has added an additional $37,904 to the project, according to the change orders. With some other added expenses, such as the addition of speed bumps at the middle and high school parking lots, the total cost increase is $55,904.
The district did receive credit from the contractor in the amount of $18,000 for using manufactured Dumpster gates instead of fabricated ones, Matowitz said.
The result is that the contingency dollars remaining for the project are $22,096, which concerns Matowitz.
“If we find any more soft soils … that’s not a lot of money for anything that might crop up,” he said.
Also during the meeting, the board approved a contract with Berlitz Jr. to provide ESL (English as a second language) services to students for the coming school year.
Director of Student Services Susan Chute said about 30 students a year need help with their English language skills. The annual contract is for $31,700.
In other business, the board thanked Chute, who is retiring at the end of the month, for her service to the district.
The board will meet for a work session Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Administration Building, 3496 Everett Road. The next regular meeting will be Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Revere High School Library, 3420 Everett Road.
