St. Sebastian students help military family, troops
By Kathleen Folkerth
WEST AKRON — Students from St. Sebastian School’s kindergarten through third grades collected items for the troops in Afghanistan this fall. School officials said students also “adopted” the Travers family, who are originally from North Canton. Gabriel Travers is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, and he served in Afghanistan until he returned home Nov. 21. He is shown at right with his wife, Megan, and one of their children as he arrives home in time for Thanksgiving. The Travers are currently stationed in Italy and will not be home for the Christmas holidays.

“I wanted to find a way to show support to the troops for all that they do to keep us and our families safe,” said Amanda Coyle, a first-grade teacher at St. Sebastian and a friend of the Travers family. “I feel that the students were able to learn a great deal from this project and they were so excited to be a part of it.”
Students collected more than 30 boxes of items requested by the troops, which were recently sent to an Air Force K-9 unit in Afghanistan, school officials noted.
