AKRON — This December, Project RISE received more than 900 backpacks filled with school supplies and also separate boxes of books and snacks from Feed the Children for children and youth experiencing homelessness.

The donation was delivered to the Akron Public Schools warehouse. Several Project RISE staff members and local shelter liaisons were on site that day to collect the supplies for residents at the shelters. Also in attendance to receive supplies were several “doubled up” families. Because of economic hardship, countless families are forced to “double up” in the homes of their friends or relatives, often moving from place to place regularly, according to Project RISE officials.

Shown above, Project RISE Manager Debra Manteghi and staff members Rachel Breece, Megan Heavrin and Kelly Urbano display donated backpacks.
