APS officials recognize retiring employees
The Akron Public Schools Board of Education’s June 9 meeting began with the recognition of career educators retiring from active service.
Emeritus certificates were awarded to educators who have completed a minimum of 30 years of employment, including at least 25 years of service to the district. Emeritus certificates were awarded to elementary school teacher Pamela Wheeler, middle school teacher Deborah Gironda, high school teacher Cynthia Mathias and field administrator James Bradford.
Certificates of appreciation were awarded to all others, regardless of years of service.
“Thank you so much for your service,” said board President Lisa Mansfield. “This is one of our favorite meetings of the year, because we get to recognize all of you.”
Following the commendations, the board recessed to executive session and returned to approve a consent agenda, business affairs and superintendent recommendations that include: a service agreement with the Blick Clinic, to provide an alternative education program for special education students from July through June 2015, at a cost not to exceed $347,211; and a service agreement with the Akron YMCA for placement and education of special education students in fourth through 12th grades, at a cost of up to $532,777, to be paid from the General Fund and the IDEA Part B fund.
The board approved the comprehensive mathematics adoption of 2012 following a two-year delay to allow students within the sequence of instruction to catch up with the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards for mathematics.
Also approved was the purchase of district-wide Algebra II textbooks and instructional materials. The board approved the purchase of 1,500 textbook packages, which cost $150 each, from Pearson Publishers, not to exceed $250,000. A proposal for the purchase was made by board member Dave Lombardi, who explained the $150 price tag includes digital content and is the standard rate for the materials.
In other business, the board approved up to $12,611 from a School Improvement Grant for 31 Buchtel Community Learning Center staff members to attend the New Tech Conference in New Orleans in July.
Also approved were appropriations of $219,471 for the anticipated enrollment in the 2014 Secondary Summer School Program and a $310,090 contract to West Roofing Systems Inc. for improvements at North High School.
The next regular APS school board meeting is scheduled for June 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sylvester Small Administration Building, located at 70 N. Broadway St.
