Walsh Jesuit to celebrate 50th anniversary

CUYAHOGA FALLS — Walsh Jesuit High School, located at 4550 Wyoga Lake Road, will host a celebration of its 50th anniversary Sept. 27.

Walsh Jesuit was funded by a gift from Cornelius Walsh, a prominent businessman in Cuyahoga Falls in the early 1900s, according to school officials. The gift, along with funding from the Cleveland Catholic Diocese and the purchase of 50 acres of Conway Farm, established the location and concept of Walsh Jesuit High School. On Sept. 27, 1964, the Rev. Francis Dietz, SJ, Walsh Jesuit’s first president, held a “blessing of grounds” ceremony, and on Sept. 7, 1965, Walsh Jesuit opened its doors to 153 freshmen.

The 50th anniversary celebrations to mark that occasion will begin with a Mass in the Chapel at 5 p.m. and continue with a party in the dome from 6 to 11 p.m. The party will include more than 20 local food vendors, live music and dancing beginning at 8 p.m.

The live music will include country music artist Mark Leach, a 2008 alumnus of Walsh Jesuit, and 2001 alumni Kira Leyden Andrea and Jeff Andrea, of The Strange Familiar. In addition, the Dave Banks Big Band, a 17-piece swinging big band with Walsh Jesuit Theater Director Dave Banks as lead trumpet, will perform.

“We are excited to celebrate all that Walsh Jesuit has accomplished in just 50 short years,” said Karl Ertle, Walsh Jesuit’s president. “This is a great time for all in our Walsh Jesuit community to come together and honor each other, our alumni, our faculty and staff — all the people that truly make Walsh Jesuit an extraordinary place.”

Old Trail School offering free reading program for toddlers

BATH — Old Trail School is presenting Story-Time for Toddlers as part of its Little Readers @ Your Library program. Story-Time for Toddlers will take place on Thursdays from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., with sessions starting in September. This program is free and open to the public.

Story-Time for Toddlers provides toddlers ages 18 months to 3 years with an interactive storytelling format to help them develop language skills. Parents and children attend together. Sessions include stories, songs, finger play and more. The program is designed to instill a lifelong love of reading as early as possible.

The eight-week sessions are held in the Old Trail School library, located at 2315 Ira Road. Class size is limited to 10 families for each session, and registration will be accepted by web, email, fax or mail after the dates listed below.

For the 2014-15 school year, the following sessions are scheduled:

  • Fall 2014: Sept. 18 through Nov. 13, with registration beginning Sept. 8;
  • Winter 2015: Jan. 22 through March 12, with registration beginning Jan. 12; and
  • Spring 2015: April 9 through May 21, with registration beginning March 16.

Lippman School presenting session on sports brain injuries

WEST AKRON — The Lippman School will host a Community Forum to present information on sports-related head injuries.

Dr. Joseph Congeni, medical director of the Sports Medicine Center at Akron Children’s Hospital, will present “Youth Sports Brain Injuries: More Questions Than Answers” Sept. 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Shaw JCC auditorium, 750 White Pond Drive.

Congeni will explore the importance of parents and coaches recognizing the warning signs of concussion, the different types of concussion and emerging new science on how they should be treated, as well as the long-term effects of brain injuries. There also will be a question-and-answer session following the presentation.

Congeni has been honored with The Ohio Athletic Trainer’s Association Team Physician of the Year Award, the Ohio State Medical Association’s Outstanding Team Physician Award and the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Respect the Game Award.

UA psychology archives renamed after $3.5 million gift

DOWNTOWN AKRON — Thanks to a total $5 million gift, the Drs. Nicholas and Dorothy Cummings Center for the History of Psychology has been established at The University of Akron (UA).

Founded in 1965 as the Archives of the History of American Psychology, the new Cummings Center for the History of Psychology has emerged as the national clearinghouse and protector of irreplaceable artifacts, collecting, preserving and making available primary source material in the history of psychology, according to UA officials.

The Cummings Center houses numerous rare collections — from media to manuscripts and from tests to instruments — as well as materials from a Nobel Laureate and many of the most iconic objects in the history of psychology. The Cummings Center has earned the designation as a Smithsonian Affiliate, according to UA officials.

The financial gift allows the Cummings Center to expand its museum and construct a dedicated research space and offices for visiting scholars and staff, as well as to fund an endowment to support a full-time associate director position to enable the director to focus on advancing the Cummings Center’s reputation and fundraising.

“The Cummings are synonymous with transformation and innovation in psychology,” said Dr. David Baker, Margaret Clark Morgan executive director of the Cummings Center. “Their generous support ensures that the complete historical record of the science and practice of psychology will be available for generations to come.”

Dr. Nicholas Cummings, a native of Salinas, California, is widely considered the world’s foremost entrepreneur in psychology, according to UA officials. He is a former president of the American Psychological Association and is the author of more than 450 journal articles and 51 books. He also is the recipient of numerous awards, including psychology’s highest — the APF Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Practice.

Dr. Dorothy Mills Cummings, married to Nicholas for more than 65 years, is a noted licensed clinical social worker.

 

Highland Facilities Advisory Group reviewing options

MEDINA COUNTY — A Facilities Advisory Group of 28 people from the Highland Local School District community is preparing to make a recommendation to the Highland Board of Education about the next steps needed to address aging elementary and middle school facilities.

The three elementary schools in the district are all approximately 80 years old and present educational and financial challenges to the district, according to district officials. Facility experts from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) conducted a comprehensive assessment of the facilities and recommended building three new elementary schools because the cost associated with renovating these buildings to meet state minimum standards is about 79 percent of the cost to build new, district officials added.

The advisory group of community leaders, elected officials and parents recently met to tour district facilities, look at the aging buildings and review funding options, weighing the cost, need and potential community support in preparation for making a recommendation to the Board of Education on how it should proceed.
