COVENTRY — Students heard the school bells ringing on the first day of school at Coventry Local Schools Aug. 26. Students were welcomed by their principals and teachers, toured their buildings and learned about their new classes.

At Turkeyfoot Elementary School, which houses preschool through second-grade classes, Principal Tim Bryan said the staff and students were getting comfortable with each other. Students were getting screened all week for kindergarten, which begins at Turkeyfoot Sept. 2.

“It’s a hectic, overwhelming day, but there are a lot of smiles. It’s so exciting at this age,” said Bryan.

Second-grader Julia Crepage greets Bryan with a hug as she enters school on the first day, shown at right.

Third- and fourth-graders at Lakeview Elementary School met with their new teachers and learned the classroom expectations, said Principal Paula Prentice.

“The day went really smooth, and the teachers did a great job,” she said.

New this year at Lakeview is the Reading Garden in the atrium of the building. The site was created with Parent Teacher Association funds.

“It’s a quiet area with benches and flowers where teachers can bring the kids outside to read at any time,” Prentice said.
