DOWNTOWN AKRON — Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands recently presented the 2017 Access to Justice Scholarship to University of Akron (UA) third-year law student Kenton Steele. In the photo above, Steele, of West Akron, is pictured in front with UA law student Francis de la Serna at left and UA School of Law Professor Dana Cole and Rowlands in the back row.

According to Rowlands, Steele applied for the scholarship through the National Association of Women Judges’ (NAWJ) Access to Justice Scholarship Program. Rowlands chairs District 7 of the organization. The scholarship is offered to a UA School of Law student who participated in Akron Law’s Summer Trial Academy, is in good academic standing and is committed to the achievement of equality of opportunity and access in the justice system.

The NAWJ promotes “the judicial role of protecting the rights of individuals under the rule of law through strong, committed, diverse judicial leadership; fairness and equality in the courts; and equal access to justice.”
