DOWNTOWN AKRON — Hundreds of men, women and children strapped on high-heeled shoes and walked 1 mile in Downtown Akron April 27 to protest rape and sexual violence. Presented by Zar Nightclub and Martini Bar, the seventh annual Walk A Mile In Her Shoes® Akron event raised approximately $45,000 for The Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties, according to organizers.

“It’s always impressive to see how passionate the community gets about this cause,” said Getta Cornici, event organizer. “Not only do men literally walk in women’s shoes, but they spend months in advance raising money for their teams.”

The keynote speaker, Akron Deputy Mayor Dave Lieberth, told the crowd that women usually wear high heels when they’re stepping out, and on Friday men put them on to step up.

Organizers report that more than 40 teams participated in the event, and Team KNR, the law firm of Kisling, Nestico and Redick (KNR) LLC, shown at right top, raised the most — $5,109. Team Wookie was second, with $4,462, and Team SC Adult Probation Sex Offender Unit raised $3,293.

“I’m proud of the amount of money we raised and the great staff we have that gave up their personal time to support the social issues in our community,” said KNR founding partner Rob Nestico.

The Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties is a nonprofit organization serving sexual assault victims and co-survivors in Summit and Medina Counties in Northeast Ohio. The 24-hour crisis hotline is available at 330-434-7273 or 877-906-7273.
