Big day for big trucks at Case Elementary
By Kathleen Folkerth
WEST AKRON — Students at Case Elementary School spent part of May 17 learning about large vehicles as part of Big Truck Day. The two-hour event allowed students to get up close to a variety of trucks, like the fire truck pictured at left top, and find out what they’re used for and how they help residents.
Pictured at right top is Lt. Joe Rusov, of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, as he controls a robot used to handle explosive devices.

Children also had the chance to step inside a working ambulance, as shown at right bottom, where Akron Children’s Hospital nurse Pam Rogers talked about emergency medicine.
Student Aaron Difeo, 12, is shown at left bottom as he asks mechanic John Walter a question about tow trucks.
The day also included a street sweeper, vacuum truck, paper recycling truck, SWAT Operations vehicle, METRO Regional Transit Authority bus and construction equipment.
School officials said students also had the chance to learn about the workers who use the vehicles. Teachers also developed mini-lessons to coincide with the event.
