PORTAGE LAKES — Area residents were able to get an early start to the Fourth of July holiday with a number of waterside events this past weekend.

The Portage Lakes Boat Parade presented to area residents July 1 included plenty to see as colorfully decorated boats wound their way through the lakes.

Shown at left top is the Vesco-Bachmen-Dietz-Reinieke-Thomas-Love families’ entry as it passes by the Coventry clock tower.

Another entry, shown at right bottom, brought Santa to the area a little early.

Pictured at right middle is the Coventry High School Football Alumni float as it passes through the East Reservoir.

The Sours family’s entry, Portage Lakes Monopoly, shown at right top, also made the rounds through the lakes.

The boat parade finished at Portage Lakes State Park beach, where activities continued with a sand castle building contest and, in the evening, the fifth annual Light up the Lakes boat parade. An entry decorated as a fire engine, complete with squirting water, is shown at left bottom. The daylong events concluded with fireworks at 10 p.m.
