GroundWorks readying for new season

AKRON — GroundWorks DanceTheater will feature world premieres by guest choreographer Doug Elkins, GroundWorks Artistic Director David Shimotakahara and GroundWorks Artistic Associate Amy Miller in its upcoming season.

The Northeast Ohio season will kick off Aug. 10-11 at 8:45 p.m. each night with free performances at the Glendale Cemetery in West Akron as part of the city of Akron’s Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival. The program will include the world premiere of Shimotakahara’s latest work, “Brubeck,” a tribute to American jazz icon and pianist Dave Brubeck. The repertoire also will feature “CoDa,” “Sweet” and the Akron premiere of Miller’s “Current Frame.”

Other performances will include Aug. 12 at 8:30 p.m. at Lincoln Park in Tremont and Aug. 17-19 at Cain Park’s Alma Theater in Cleveland Heights.

Elkins’ new work will premiere at its inaugural performance Oct. 26-27 at 7:30 p.m. at the new Allen Theatre in PlayhouseSquare and also be part of the repertoire for GroundWorks performances at the Akron-Summit County Public Library Nov. 16-17 at 7:30 p.m.
