Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties
WEST AKRON — The third annual Walk and Wag Against Abuse, which will benefit the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties, will take place Aug. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hardesty Park, 1615 W. Market St. This year’s event will include a short charity fundraising walk through the park, informative demonstrations and exhibits, vendors, contests, prizes, give-aways and family activities. Both dogs and humans are invited to participate. Admission is $12 for adults and free for children. To purchase tickets, visit Eventbrite.com. Huntington’s Disease Society of America
WEST AKRON — The Hounds for Huntington’s Dog Walk will take place Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon at Hardesty Park, 1615 W. Market St. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Huntington’s Disease Society of America and its mission to help improve the lives of people affected by Huntington’s Disease. The walk also will include contests for dogs, including an ice cream eating contest. Pet portraits also will be available. Early bird registration is available before Aug. 15. Individual registration (one person with a dog) is $20, and the family rate (up to five people with a dog) is $35. After Aug. 15, individual registration is $25 and the family rate is $45. United Way of Summit County
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Local teams are invited to register to help the United Way (UW) of Summit County break the world’s record for the greatest number of people playing cornhole in the same competition. The event will take place at the 2012 UW/Red Cross Campaign kickoff Sept. 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lock 3 Park, 200 S. Main St. Two-person teams can register for $20, which includes their chance to participate and a LIVE UNITED shirt for each player. A $10 registration option also is available, which does not include shirts. The first-place team will win $100 and a custom-made UW cornhole board set for each team member. The second place team will win $50. To meet the Guinness requirements, UW officials said all teams must be preregistered. To register, go to www.uwsum mit.org/misc/cornholetourna ment.htm. During the event, spectators will be welcome to watch, and concessions will be available, with all proceeds going to the UW/Red Cross campaign.
