Susan G. Komen Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND — The Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will hold its 19th annual Cleveland Race for the Cure Sept. 15 at the Wolstein Center, 2000 Prospect Ave. E. Registration the morning of the race will begin at 6 a.m., with the 5K competitive race beginning at 9:15 a.m. The day also will include a survivor ceremony at 8 a.m., a 5K race/walk, a 1-mile walk, a Kids’ Dash and more. According to event officials, up to 75 percent of the funds raised at the Race for the Cure will stay in Northeast Ohio to help those most in need in the community. In 2012, Komen Northeast Ohio granted $1.1 million to 17 organizations in Northeast Ohio. To register in advance by the Sept. 10 deadline, visit www.komenneohio.org.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

CLEVELAND — In an effort to meet an increasing demand for food and other emergency relief services to the region’s needy, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Cleveland (SVDP) will host its first annual Friends of the Poor Walk Sept. 29 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Cleveland Metroparks’ Brookside Reservation, adjacent to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The fundraiser will allow community members from all walks of life to participate in a simultaneous, nationwide event to increase awareness of the numerous challenges faced by the poor in the region, and generate significant funds earmarked for direct assistance to the needy. The walk is fun, there are no administrative fees and all monies raised locally will be utilized to help Northeast Ohio low-income residents, according to event officials. The local fundraiser is part of a national event that is now in its fifth year, the SVDP USA Annual Friends of the Poor Walk, which was held at approximately 200 locations across the country in 2011.
