Akron Children’s Hospital Sickle Cell Program
DOWNTOWN AKRON — On Sept. 22 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Let’s Move Summit County! will collaborate with the Akron Children’s Hospital Sickle Cell Program for the Ninth Annual Mychal Clayton Sickle Cell Awareness Walk at Lock 3 Park. Registration for the walk is $15 and is payable at the event. Free “Let’s Move” T-shirts are available for the first 100 registered youths who participate. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Akron Children’s Hospital Sickle Cell Program, which is dedicated to education, awareness and support of children and families affected by sickle cell disease. Prior to the walk, which will begin at 10:15 a.m., the Black Thunder Motorcycle Club will ride to promote sickle cell awareness. The ride will begin at 10 a.m. (riders should arrive by 9 a.m.). The ride will begin on Main Street in front of Lock 3 Park and proceed through the city. The walk (approximately 1.2 miles) will begin and end at Lock 3 Park on the Cuyahoga Valley Towpath Trail. Women’s Endowment Fund
BATH — The Women’s Endowment Fund (WEF) is partnering with local fitness instructor Jeananne Siegferth for a Zumba benefit Sept. 22, the proceeds of which will support the WEF’s “For Women, Forever” endowment campaign. The campaign aims to raise $2.013 million by the WEF’s 20th anniversary in 2013. The goal is to nearly triple the fund’s endowment, significantly increasing its grants to programs that keep women and girls healthy, protect them from violence and help them achieve financial independence. Siegferth is a certified group exercise instructor who specializes in Zumba and choreography. The fundraiser is open to the public. The benefit will run from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bath United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 3980 W. Bath Road. A minimum donation of $15 is requested at the door. Pajama Program
GREATER AKRON — The Eastern Ohio Chapter of the Pajama Program has 39 approved receiving organizations for the donation of children’s pajamas and books. The program is now close to providing 2 million new pajamas and new books to children in need nationwide. The Pajama Program started in the fall of 2000 when founder Genevieve Piturro began giving children in shelters and group homes their own pajamas and books. Summit County CASA/GAL
AKRON — Summit County CASA/GAL will host its annual “I Am for the Child” Fundraising Breakfast Nov. 1 at 7:30 a.m. at The University of Akron’s Martin Center,105 Fir Hill. CASA is seeking sponsors to help achieve its goal of at least $50,000. All proceeds from this event will be used for the recruitment, training and support of CASA volunteers. The Summit County Department of Job and Family Services has committed to a Bronze Sponsorship of $1,000.
