Miller South piano students learn from symphony conductor

AKRON — Levi Hammer, assistant conductor of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Akron Youth Symphony, was a special guest performer for the student body and staff Oct. 3 at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Hammer performed on the Yamaha Grand Piano in the Margo Snider Auditorium and played selections from “Rhapsody in Blue” for the audience. Hammer also conducted a Master Class on Gershwin for all fifth- though eighth-grade piano students, under the direction of piano teacher Gwen Hayes. Eighth-grader, Julian Selvaggio, pictured at right as Hammer and other students listen, was the student performer in the Master Class.
