Parade-goers think green
By Kathleen Folkerth
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Several thousand spectators lined South Main Street for the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Parade, which took place March 9 under sunny skies. More than 100 units participated in the parade, according to Leo Stalter, of New Franklin, who organizes the event for the Mark Heffernan Division and Margaret Judge Ladies Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Among those who participated in the parade were Kathleen Savich, of Tallmadge, and Rita Flinn, of Akron, who are shown at right top with family friend and Parade Grand Marshal Jack Charles, of Cuyahoga Falls. Debbie Jeffers, of Akron’s American Legion No. 449, also took part and handed out flags, as shown at right bottom.

Also participating in the parade were Peg Noon, of Firestone Park, who is shown at left top with, from left, Camryn Korara, Haley Futrell, Caden Korora and Lucas Futrell, all of Akron.
Ashley Hanchulak, 6, of Akron, is pictured at left bottom as she scrambles to pick up candy tossed by parade participants.
The parade this year featured a theme honoring the U.S. Armed Forces. Stalter said he estimates that between 8,000 and 10,000 people came downtown for the annual event, which also included bands, Irish dancers, floats and local dignitaries.
“It went very, very well,” he said. “We’re very pleased.”
