DOWNTOWN AKRON — On April 26, nearly 500 men, women and children gathered and marched against sexual assault and gender violence at the eighth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event at Lock 3 Park. Presented by Ice Miller LLC, individuals and teams raised money to support the services provided by the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties. A little more than $54,000 was raised, according to event officials. The winning team and defending champion this year was Team KNR of Kisling, Nestico and Redick. The runner up was the Hudson Firefighters Association, and Team Oriana placed third. About 250 University of Akron (UA) students participated, with many acting as volunteers, according to event officials. The Rookie Team of the Year award went to Heel Yea (The UA Social Work Department). Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity from UA raised the most funds online. As the event concluded, participants took away the words of Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Tom Teodosio urging the community to stop blaming the victim and take action to end sexual assault, according to organizers.
