This year, the event will take place June 29 from noon until 11 p.m. at Boettler Park, 5300 Massillon Road. Presented by the city of Green, the event is sponsored by Summa Health System and Legends Sports Pub & Grille, with support also from General RV.
The family-oriented event offers activities for children, food, live music and fireworks.
“FreedomFest is backyard fun for all ages, making it an enjoyable event to go to with the whole family,” said Kim Goodhart, Green Parks and Recreation Special Events and Program coordinator. “Music, food, games and more — what a perfect way to start celebrating the Fourth of July a few days early.”
Goodhart said FreedomFest will offer lots of activities for children, such as a bounce house and inflatables, a mechanical bull, a bungee run, mobile gaming, a flight simulator and old-fashioned games such as hula-hoops and potato sack races. The day’s activities also will include balloon art, face painting and a misting tent set up by Donamarc Water Systems to help visitors keep cool in case of hot weather.
Also planned is a chain saw demonstration carving the Green Parks’ fox mascot Parker, an Akron Zoo display and Guardians Advocating Child Safety and Protection (GASP) offering fingerprinting for children.
In addition, a variety of local businesses will be exhibiting throughout the afternoon, offering information about their products and services. Some of these include: Boggs Chiropractic, Cindy’s Airbrush Tattoos, Imagine That Parties, Origami Owl Custom Jewelry, Simply Silver, Thirty-One, Walnut Wood Preschool and Daycare, Green Valley United Methodist Church, Parkside Church — Green, and River of Life Assembly of God.
Area residents can spend the day at the park enjoying the activities and bring a family picnic or enjoy purchases from Chick-fil-A, Stoddard’s Ice Cream and The Pierogi Lady. Vendors also will sell festival food, and there will be a beer and wine garden set up for adults, as well as a wing-eating contest planned.
Live music on the Legends stage will include the Danny Milan Band performing a Billy Joel tribute concert at 6 p.m., and 7 Bridges, an Eagles tribute band, performing at 8:30 p.m.
At 8:15 p.m., skydivers, an annual tradition, will descend into the park if weather conditions permit. The evening will end with the city’s presentation of fireworks at approximately 10:15 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the fireworks will be rescheduled for June 30 at the same time.
Free parking for FreedomFest will be available at Boettler Park and at various lots set up along International Parkway. Handicap parking will be available inside the park.
Local businesses and not-for-profits interested in exhibiting at FreedomFest may contact the Parks and Recreation office at 330-896-6621.
