Diabetes Research Fundraiser
NEW FRANKLIN — A Diabetes Research Fundraiser will be presented Sept. 15 beginning at 1 p.m. at Dusty’s Landing, 4764 Dustys Road. The event will include food, live music, door prizes, games, a hole-in-one competition with a 50/50 split, cornhole and raffles of gift baskets, gift cards and more. Donations are being accepted for gift baskets and raffle and door prizes. Volunteers also are needed. Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America
GREEN — Diana Schenkenberger, of Norton, is coordinating the 2013 Akron Area 5K Run & Walk for Children With Apraxia of Speech event taking place Sept. 21 at Boettler Park. To date, nearly 100 participants have raised more than $3,000. All proceeds will benefit apraxia programs and research of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA). Childhood apraxia of speech is a disorder that makes it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables and/or words, despite having a good understanding of language. The Walk for Children With Apraxia of Speech® is held as a means to heighten awareness and funding. The Akron Area 5K Run and Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech is open to all adults and children. On-site registration and check-in will begin at 9 a.m. for runners and 9:30 a.m. for walkers, with the run starting at 9:30 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in registering, making a donation or learning more about the event can contact firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the event website at secure.apraxia-kids.org/akronwalk.
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Light the Night Walk, an annual fundraising event to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer, is scheduled for Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. starting at the Stile Athletics Field House at The University of Akron, 298 S. Union St. The mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families, according to organization officials. The Light the Night Walk funds research and support programs for people battling cancer, including free family support groups, an educational website, seminars and conferences, direct patient financial aid and copay assistance, according to organization officials. Locally, the Northern Ohio Chapter held three walks, hosting more than 5,000 participants who raised more than $600,000, according to local chapter officials, and this year, the chapter hopes to raise $750,000 to further the LLS mission. Participants can form fundraising teams and collect donations by sending emails through the Light the Night website, making personal requests or selling paper balloons at retail locations.
