Firestone Theatre season ready to kick off
WEST AKRON — The 2013-14 Firestone Theatre season includes two popular musicals, a classic comedy and numerous other performances.
The main stage series will kick off with Shakespeare’s classic romp “Comedy of Errors” Oct. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. Reserved VIP tickets are $13.
The musical “Dreamgirls” will take the stage Nov. 20-23. Curtain time will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 20, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21-22 and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Reserved VIP tickets are $13. A Soul Food Dinner will take place at 5 and 6 p.m. between performances Nov. 23.
The Akron School for the Arts is set to be the third school in the nation to present “Mary Poppins” when it completes the main stage season with performances March 19-22. Curtain time will be at 7 p.m. March 19, 7:30 p.m. March 20-21 and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. March 22. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Reserved VIP tickets are $15. A Fish and Chips Dinner will take place at 5 and 6 p.m. between performances March 22, and a High Tea with Mary Poppins will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 15.
A subscription is available for the main stage shows and more. Adult subscriptions start at $30, and a student subscription can be purchased for $20. A reserved VIP subscription can be purchased for $36 and includes a reserved seat for each of the main stage shows, entry to the second stage performances and access to a special VIP room before and at intermission of each main stage performance. The second stage series commences with a number of open rehearsals for the Akron School for the Arts improv troup, frys w/ tht? An audience is invited to attend and participate starting with the first performance Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. The series will continue with the performance of the annual 24-Hour Theatre Project Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. The annual student band-centered rock ‘n’ roll show, StoneStock 2013, will hit the stage Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The annual One-Act Play Festival will be performed Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The second stage series will conclude with the annual Spring Dance Concert presented April 4-5 at 7:30 p.m.
All second stage events are included in the subscription series. A special performance of “Dear Gabby: The Confessions of an Over-Achiever,” directed by guest artist Elynmarie Kazle, will be held on a date not yet determined.
Two additional performances not included on the subscription series are designed especially for children. A performance of “Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr.” will take place Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Akron Civic Theatre, 182 S. Main St. Tickets can be purchased at the Civic Box Office. The production is available to tour to elementary schools throughout the Akron area. Plus, a special performance presented by the Frisch Marionette Company of Cincinnati will round out the season. These puppeteers will present their version of “The Wizard of Oz” featuring handcrafted puppets. Performances will be May 22.
