Zoar Village hosting Speaker Series

ZOAR — Historic Zoar Village continues to offer free educational programs in 2014 through the Saturdays in Zoar Speaker Series. All presentations are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. in the Historic Zoar Schoolhouse, unless otherwise noted. The 2014 schedule includes:

  • Feb. 1, “Ghost Stories of Tuscarawas County,” presented by Jon Baker;
  • March 1, “General John Hunt Morgan’s Raid of Ohio During the Civil War,” presented by Frank Barrett;
  • April 5, “Dr. Mary Edwards, Civil War Doctor,” played by Debra Conner;
  • May 3, “Covered Bridges of Tuscarawas County,” presented by Terry Miller in the Zoar Church;
  • June 7, “19th Century Zoar Visits by Constance Fennimore Woolson, American Novelist,” presented by Kathy Fernandez;
  • July 5, “Letters That Inspired the Book ‘Your Affectionate Son: Letters from a Civil War Soldier,’” presented by author Milann Daugherty;
  • Aug. 2, “Fanny Crosby, Blind Hymn Writer and Poet,” played by Raylene Hlavaty in the Zoar Church;
  • Sept. 6, “U.S. Presidents From Ohio,” presented by Gerry Bazer;
  • Oct. 4, “Story of Private Hiram Terman During the Civil War,” presented by Max Terman, author and descendant of Private Terman;
  • Nov. 1, “Experiences of German Settlers in America,” presented by Nancy Ottman, from the Ohio Chapter Palatinates to America; and
  • Dec. 6, “White House Christmas Traditions,” presented by Christopher Kenney, of the McKinley Museum, in the Zoar Church.

The Speaker Series was awarded a History Outreach Award in Public Programming by The Ohio Local History Alliance in 2013.
