Discovery Montessori School’s chess teams excel at meets

WEST AKRON — Discovery Montessori School’s chess teams won first place at tournaments Feb. 22.

According to chess team coach Kala Bagley, a group of chess team members won first place in the K-6 Novice Division at the Canton Chess Scholastic Tournament at Alliance Middle School.

Shown at right, from left, are Andrew Scott, Mia Scott, Ravinda Mendis and Alaiah Hodges.

Members of the chess team also competed at the Stark Youth Chess League 2014 Final Mate Tournament and won first place in the Novice K-4 Division. Azekiel Al Amin placed second, Hemma Bagley placed third and Jacob Geletka placed fourth. Siblings Suhaan Yadama and Sahithi Yadama also competed.

Another group of chess team members placed second in the Intermediate Novice Division. Maya Miller and Rowan Miller placed first. Shanaya Jayewardene also competed.
