GREATER AKRON — The Nervous Dog Coffee Bar, a locally owned coffee shop in West Akron and Stow, is offering an Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank branded bag of coffee called Coffee with a Purpose. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will help provide eight meals to those in need through the Foodbank. The coffee is being sold through the coffee bar’s fundraising program Nervous Dog, Too. The idea to contribute to the Foodbank came after a security camera captured a man entering the Nervous Dog in Stow in November 2013 and stealing from the barista’s tip jar while her back was turned, according to company officials. Instead of reporting the theft to the police, Michael Litt, founder of Nervous Dog Coffee, organized a food drive for the man. The incident garnered much attention in the national media. When the “tip-jar thief” didn’t come back to pick up his food donations, the hundreds of pounds collected were taken to the Foodbank. From that donation, a partnership was formed between Nervous Dog, Too and the Foodbank, according to company officials. The coffee is roasted locally in Northeast Ohio and can be delivered to anyone in the country. To purchase a bag, visit acrfb.nervousdogtoo.org.

In addition, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) will host a canned food drive April 12-13 to benefit the Foodbank. Passengers participating can climb aboard the National Park Scenic excursion and pay just $5 when they bring along a nonperishable item or $1 cash to donate. Tickets are normally $12 per person. The Foodbank welcomes all food donations but asks participants to consider making a financial contribution, which Foodbank officials say can go even further to help feed those in need. The most needed items are boxed cereal, peanut butter, canned tuna, canned vegetables, canned beef stew and canned soup. Passengers can board at either the Akron Northside Station or the Peninsula Depot. Passengers will take a ride through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The National Park Scenic excursion is a two-hour round trip. Riders also can choose to enjoy a layover in Peninsula, if departing from Northside, before the return train ride to Akron. While on board, the GPS audio tour Voices of the Valley will be available. The train departs at 10:10 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. at the Akron Northside Station, located at 27 Ridge St. in Downtown Akron, and at 9:05 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. at the Peninsula Depot, located at 1630 W. Mill St. No reservations are necessary. Tickets for all other Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad excursions and special events can be purchased online at www.CVSR.com.
