West Side Cause for Celebration
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
WALLHAVEN — The Northern Ohio Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation will present its Akron Great Strides 10K walk May 18 at 2 p.m. at Hardesty Park. Registration will begin at 1 p.m., and prewalk activities will take place until 2 p.m. The route includes West Akron neighborhoods and the grounds of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. A post-walk Victory Celebration with food, music and refreshments also will be offered for participants. Akron Children’s Hospital is the site sponsor for the event. The local chapter is looking for individuals and companies to form teams of family members, friends, coworkers or neighbors for this year’s walk. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections and which also obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. To get involved in Great Strides or for more information, call 216-475-2873, email northernOH@cff.org or visit greatstrides.cff.org.
Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation
DOWNTOWN AKRON — Sally Ohle organized the first Akron-area Walk With Love in May 2013 to support the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, a group conducting research to help identify the cause of breast cancer, after her niece, Mary Tramonte, was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30, when she was seven months pregnant with her son, Colten, according to event organizers. After having her baby early, Tramonte immediately began treatment to shrink her tumor, undergoing months of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, according to organizers. This year, she received a second diagnosis of breast cancer. Approximately 30 area residents participated in the 2013 Akron walk. “Colten’s Crew,” the name of the group behind the Akron-area walk, will return May 18 with another event to raise money for the foundation. This year’s walk will take place at the same time the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation stages its own “Walk With Love” event in Santa Monica. Colten’s Crew walks organized by other members of Tramonte’s family also are taking place in New Orleans and Denver May 18. The local walks will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. at Lock 3. Walkers will travel a 2-mile circuit through Downtown Akron. There will be music, food trucks, raffles and entertainment, as well as a free polarity yoga session, at Lock 3. To walk, register in advance by visiting www.walkwithlove2014.kintera.org/coltenscrew or register on-site at the event. Donations for Colten’s Crew/Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation also can be made at the website. In addition, Mary’s sister, Lynn Tramonte, wrote and published a juicing guide that she is selling to raise funds for the foundation and cover patient expenses. “Necterrific: Vibrant Juice Recipes for a Vibrant Life” is available for purchase in two formats: softcover (www.lulu.com/spotlight/coltenscrew) and e-book (www.blurb.com/b/5164062-necterrific).
