Chess club wins awards at competition

WEST AKRON — Discovery Montessori School’s Chess Club participated in the 2014 State All-Girls Chess Championship in Perrysburg April 12.

Seven girls participated in the tournament, shown above with their coaches.

The club includes students from various schools, according to club officials.

In the K-12 Reserve Section, sixth-grader Maya Miller (Spring Garden School in Copley) won first place and fourth-grader Hemma Bagley (Discovery Montessori School) won fifth place.

In the Nonrated K-12 Section, fifth-grader Mia Scott (Spring Garden) won second place, fifth-grader Shanaya Jayewardene (Copley-Fairlawn Middle School) won third place and fourth-grader Alaiah Hodges (Discovery) won fourth place. Nidhi Dyavanapalli (Discovery) and Sahithi Yadama (Ft. Island Primary School in Fairlawn) also participated.

Discovery Montessori School won third place in Nonrated K-12 Team Championship. Team members include Hodges and Dyavanapalli.
