South Side Neighborhood Watch
COVENTRY: Summit County sheriff’s deputies were called to a Manchester Road car wash Jan. 3, when an Akron man reported he was assaulted by another Akron man who kicked his cell phone out of his hand and knocked his glasses off his face during an argument. The suspect was gone when deputies arrived, but they located him. He admitted arguing with the victim but denied any physical violence occurred. Due to conflicting information, the victim was referred to the prosecutor’s office.
A township worker reported Jan. 6 that unknown suspects damaged a lamppost in the parking lot of a Portage Lakes Drive plaza, where the post was lying on the ground. The power company turned off electricity to the post, and township workers took it for repair.
On Jan. 7, deputies investigated the burglary and grand theft of a vehicle at an Eastern Road residence where suspects ransacked belongings inside the home, took car keys and drove away in the victim’s green 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Nothing else was reported missing.
Three male Coventry High School students reported Jan. 10 that suspects stole cell phones, wallets, gift cards and identification from lockers while they were at wrestling practice between 3 and 6 p.m.
A representative of a South Main Street yacht club reported Jan. 11 that suspects stole firewood worth $300 from outside the club.
An employee of a Manchester Road pizza restaurant reported that suspects stole $187 from her coat while she worked Jan. 12.
Also that day, an Akron man and a Tallmadge man were charged with breaking and entering after deputies found pieces of copper pipe in their truck and checking a Minor Road home that they had received a call about to find it had exposed copper pipe. Officials said the men would pose as repairmen, landscapers or snow removal workers, and break into vacant homes to take the copper and sell it a local scrap yards.
A Mallard Point Drive woman reported Jan. 12 an unknown suspect attempted to retrieve personal information from her computer via the Internet.

GREEN: A Lynne Road woman called Summit County sheriff’s deputies Jan. 6 to report she argued with an Akron man at her home and he broke her cell phone and threatened her with physical harm. She declined prosecution and asked that the incident be documented. She was advised to call deputies if the behavior continued.
A Green High School employee reported a Pickle Road woman threatened her during a phone conversation Jan. 6. The woman denied making threats, and deputies advised her to have no contact with the employee, whose complaint was referred to the prosecutor’s office.
Deputies went to an Arlington Ridge Road location Jan. 8 and arrested a Hartville man on a Norton warrant for having a loud vehicle exhaust system.
On Jan. 8, a Millersburg couple reported they arrived at Akron-Canton Airport from Sarasota, Fla., to find a GPS unit and jewelry had been stolen from their luggage.
A Clinton man was arrested for theft and released with a court summons Jan. 8 after employees of an Arlington Ridge Road store reported he removed a zip drive from packaging, placed it in his pocket and attempted to leave the store without paying for it. Employees said the suspect’s actions and past incidents involving him were recorded on surveillance video footage, which deputies took for evidence.
A Graybill Road man reported Jan. 9 that suspects knocked over and damaged his mailbox.
On Jan. 10, a Glenridge Road woman reported an Akron man used her vehicle without permission. The suspect returned the vehicle, and the victim declined to file charges.
Deputies investigated reports of theft and misuse of a credit card Jan. 11, when a Mayfair Road woman reported her credit card and driver’s license were stolen from her residence by a suspect who used the card to make unauthorized purchases.
An employee of a Massillon Road factory reported Jan. 11 that unknown suspects stole $340 from her purse while she worked.
Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a Sunnyview Circle residence Jan. 12, when a man reported he had an altercation with his live-in girlfriend. Deputies determined no physical contact occurred, and the female agreed to leave the residence for the night.
The owner of property on Sandy Beach Drive reported Jan. 11 that suspects have been dumping trash on the property.
A Myersville Road resident reported Jan. 12 that suspects pried the lock off a barn door in an attempt to gain entry.
A Canton man was arrested at Akron-Canton Airport Jan. 13 on a Canton Police Department warrant for aggravated possession of drugs and taken to the Summit County Jail.
On Jan. 16, deputies responded to an armed robbery at a South Main Street Subway. One employee reported a white male in his 20s entered at 5:30 p.m. and showed a revolver before demanding money. The clerk handed over money and the suspect fled. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 330-643-2131 or Summit County Crimestoppers at 330-434-COPS. Crimestoppers offers rewards for information leading to an arrest.

LAKEMORE: A Main Street resident reported the theft of a video game system, two controllers and three games Jan. 10.
A Canton Road fitness center employee called police Jan. 11 to report a Springfield woman continues to call and make inappropriate comments. Police contacted her and asked her not to call again.
On Jan. 14, a Sunnyside Avenue man reported he believes his girlfriend’s mother paid someone to have him killed, which was backed up by a witness to the conversation. Police contacted the woman, who denied doing so and allegedly admitted she only told him she would kill him during a fit of anger over a custody battle involving her grandchildren. The Summit County Prosecutor’s Office declined to file charges.
An Emorey Circle resident reported Jan. 15 that someone stole $800 from a piggy bank.

NEW FRANKLIN: A Manchester Road man was arrested Jan. 13 for criminal trespass at a West Turkeyfoot Lake Road business after he was told by police one day earlier not to be on the premises again when he was found driving in the parking lot.
A Caston Road woman was arrested Jan. 14 for driving under the influence on State Road.
An Akron woman also was arrested for driving under the influence, with a BAC of .17, on Manchester Road Jan. 15.

SPRINGFIELD: The back of a Beryl Road mailbox was reported broken off Jan. 10.
A Stow woman who had parked at a South Arlington Road hardware store reported one tire on her vehicle was cut Jan. 12. Officials are checking to see if there is any video surveillance of the incident.
A Winchester man reported Jan. 13 that $4,900 in items was removed from a home he lived in on Abington Road while he was incarcerated.
Three people were charged with theft after allegedly stealing from a South Arlington Road store Jan. 13-14, including: an Akron woman for taking $283 in items; an Akron man for taking $15 in goods and a Akron juvenile male for taking $17 in items.
A Rhoadesdale Avenue man reported Jan. 14 an in-law who is also a neighbor threatened to shoot him.
A 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee was reported stolen from the parking lot of an Albrecht Avenue restaurant and bar Jan. 14.
Also on that day, five rims and four tires were reported stolen from the parking lot of a Canton Road home.
On Jan. 15, police charged a Brunk Road man with obstruction and possession of drugs and paraphernalia after investigating a hit-skip accident that occurred on Canton Road. Police traced the license plate found at the scene to the man, who admitted hitting a pole and leaving the scene after calling his mother, who owned the car he was driving and told him to drive the car home. Police also found green leafy matter and a drug pipe when they went to talk to him.
Tools were stolen from three vehicles at three separate locations, including: $1,965 worth from a truck on Celia Avenue; $2,340 worth from a truck on James Avenue; and $250 worth from a truck on Albrecht Avenue.
A Glenridge Road man called police Jan. 16 to report his vehicle was stolen while it was at a Rhoadesdale Avenue auto shop and used in a burglary in Akron. Police were trying to contact the auto shop owner to determine if the car keys had been left in the car.
On Jan. 18, police charged a Hayne Road man with violating a Summit County noise ordinance after investigating numerous complaints and warning the man, who had been riding an all-terrain vehicle without mufflers and failed to stop upon request by police.
