AKRON — The Akron Police Department (APD) is trading in its white vehicles with blue and gold decals that bore the police badge prominently on the door for a more traditional black with blue and metallic gold lettering.

The new design is the result of input from members of the department, community and city employees, according to APD officials.

The new design will be used on the newly purchased Ford Explorer and Ford Taurus vehicles. The current vehicles in the department’s fleet will retain the white with blue and gold stripes until they are replaced with the new vehicles. The new vehicles should be seen in the community within the next few months, according to APD officials.

The new design was unveiled to the public during Winterfest at Lock 3 Dec. 21.

Committee members included: Melissa Hentosz, Police Community Relations; retired officer George Wagner; Officer Dale Riley; Officer Jim Cunningham; and Allan Cerbelli, of Akron Traffic Engineering.
