Three Coventry wrestlers charged in hazing incident
COVENTRY — Three members of the Coventry High School wrestling team were charged March 13 following a Feb. 6 alleged hazing incident involving others on the team.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a 16-year-old male was charged with three counts of hazing (a fourth-degree misdemeanor), three counts of assault (a first-degree misdemeanor) and two counts of abduction (a third-degree felony). A 17-year-old male was charged with three counts of hazing and three counts of assault, and an 18-year-old was charged with one count of hazing (a first-degree misdemeanor).
The two juveniles were booked into the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center, and the 18-year-old was given a summons to appear in Barberton Municipal Court.
The case remains under investigation, and further charges are pending the outcome, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The alleged hazing took place before a home match against Southeast and Firestone high schools before Coventry head coach Keith Shinn had arrived, said Superintendent Russell Chaboudy last month. The incident was reported to school officials by parents late in the day Feb. 10, and administrators called in the Summit County Sheriff’s Office to investigate. Chaboudy said last month a group of wrestlers slapped, kicked and pushed eight freshmen in the locker room.
At that time, 11 wrestlers on the team were suspended from school for five to 10 days, and two of them were being considered for expulsion. The students also were banned from participating in any sports activities for the remainder of the year. Shinn also was placed on leave as coach. His contract ended with the season.
Chaboudy said there were no expulsions after the suspensions were served, but one of the students was placed in an alternative school setting run by the Summit County Educational Service Center and one was mandated to perform 20 hours of community service.
