To the editor:

A big thank you to Summit County! June 18 was the day the War of 1812 was declared in 1812. On [that] Monday, I had the privilege of presenting the 15-star flag to County Executive Russ Pry during a flag-raising ceremony at the Summit County Veterans Services Commission (VSC). Boy, did his office do a fabulous job setting this up — and the VSC was the perfect venue! We had re-enactors and a fabulous vocalist singing our national anthem and lots of officeholders from around the county. Even the Bicentennial Bell was there to ring as the flag rose at noon. It was better than I ever expected.

But that’s been the story for the Bicentennial of 1812 in our great county. Mayors have signed proclamations declaring June 18 Remembrance Day, historical societies have had speakers on this forgotten war, the newspapers have provided wonderful coverage, the cemeteries have been great to work with, and VSC provided “War of 1812” flag holders for all 350 of these veterans buried in Summit County — it just doesn’t get any better than this!

I am so proud of everyone involved. Thank you so much!
