Not all the cards — only the chosen ones

On the Mark — By Craig Marks

Happy belated LeBron Day.

The holiday sure creeps up on us, doesn’t it? As I’m sure you recall, the first LeBron Day was June 19, 2010, and was held at The University of Akron. Naysayers argue it was a one-time event organized by people who hoped an outpouring of love would keep LeBron James in the Cavaliers’ fold.

But if it were not an annual holiday, why are the drugstores and Hallmark outlets stocked with so many LeBron Day cards? As we do every year, let’s gather ’round the deciduous tree and hear a sample of the prose:

So a superstar of unmatched skill
And his handpicked all-star friends
Can give a town a title
Will wonders ever end?

They leave Cleveland and then win it all
Our insides, it does kill
A modality we know so well
Or “Modell-ity,” if you will

“It’s darn time”

To paraphrase your words after the game
If timekeeping concerned you
It’s really a shame

You could have asked your former team
They’re specialists at that
Having had their clocks cleaned often
Since the day you left them flat

It’s a strange cosmic coincidence
If you believe in such a thing
That a movie about the end of the world
Premiered the night you won your ring

We could be bitter or magnanimous
But you see, we choose the latter
We don’t hold onto grudges
Or star athletes, for that matter

And finally, here’s a card that is all about the hope that is this holiday:
We toast your great achievement
And it isn’t for the reason
That you can opt out of your contract
After only one more season
