Official toasts local foodbank’s success
To the editor:
Our Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank was named The National Foodbank of the Year by Feeding America, the umbrella organization for over 200 food banks in the United States. We could not overdo recognizing this achievement and the work our Foodbank staff has done for years to put our community in the position to have such a remarkable agency.
The National Foodbank of the Year Award is the Pulitzer Prize in foodbanking. Not lightly rewarded, it comes after rigorous on-site auditing and inspection by Feeding America of our Foodbank’s strategic plan, leadership, food and other essential product procurement, board governance, food safety initiatives, fundraising and overall programming.
The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is a gem in our town. It serves Summit and seven other counties and will distribute over 20 million pounds of food this year through 450 agencies that then provide the groceries, hot meals, food pantries and other availability of other essential products and services to our friends and neighbors who need some help.
Top Foodbank in the country! It’s the Division I National Championship. The Nobel Prize. It’s too bad we need food banks, but if we’ve got to have them, it’s nice to know we’ve got the best one.
Michael Lapides, Board of Directors member, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank
