DAR celebrates Constitution Week
To the editor:
As Constitution Week Chairman of the Cuyahoga Falls Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), I would like to encourage all churches, schools, courthouses, fire houses, veterans’ homes, city governments and individuals to ring their bells at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, in order to participate in the national celebration of Constitution Week, which runs through Sept. 23.
The weeklong commemoration of America’s most important document is one of our country’s least known official observances and was started by the DAR. In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside the week annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law No. 915 on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight Eisenhower.
The United States functions as a republic under the Constitution, which is the oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people. This landmark idea that men had the inalienable right as individuals to be free and live their lives under their own governance was the impetus of the American Revolution.
The Cuyahoga Falls Chapter DAR has asked Mayor Don Robart, Tallmadge Mayor David Kline and Silver Lake Mayor Bernie Hovey, along with Gov. [John] Kasich, Sen. [Frank] LaRose [R-District 27] and [Summit] County Executive Russ Pry to sign proclamations claiming Constitution Week in their districts. These will be on display with other items about the Constitution at the Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge libraries during September. Free Preamble bookmarks are also available at the libraries. Proclamations also were given to Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge area schools.
We encourage all citizens to take time this week to reflect on our heritage of freedom. We, the people, pause to remember 225 years ago, when our founding fathers signed our Constitution, putting in place a system of government not previously witnessed in human history.
Sharon Myers, Constitution Week Chairman, Cuyahoga Falls Chapter DAR, Stow
