Constitution Week celebrates importance of document
To the editor:
The city of Louisville held its 60th Constitution Week Festival recently, and our chapter was fortunate enough to be a part of the celebration. Canton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, displayed Constitution materials free to the public to bring awareness of the upcoming 225th anniversary of our Constitution. Many people stopped to discuss the Constitution, and children were invited to work a crossword puzzle or other worksheets about the Constitution.
Louisville will also hold a Constitution Week Parade on Sunday, Sept. 23.
In 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually as Constitution Week. It was signed into Public Law No. 915 on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
I would like to thank the Louisville Festival Committee for planning this family event and encourage everyone to read the Constitution and to fly their flag Sept. 17-23 to celebrate this country’s most significant document. Take advantage of the materials that DAR chapters will be displaying in local libraries. Take pride in being American and know your Constitution.
