To the editor:

I am writing to thank supporters in our community for providing children a place to thrive in the Copley-Fairlawn [City] Schools. As a teacher in a neighboring area, I am aware of the challenges schools face. Charter/private schools are not held to the same state testing standards as public schools and leech from their funding. Technology is dynamic while staying astride contemporary curriculum is a daunting task. These demands leave me impressed by the staff and education my children receive at our public Fort Island Primary School. My firstborn was a new student when Mrs. [Linda] Brown worked to connect her with other youth while personally caring for my daughter as she survived a rough adjustment. This year Ms. [Lisa] Hilliard provides instruction and communicates learning needs weekly. During specials my child builds computer skills, practices physical fitness, is enriched during library reading, while gaining cultural understanding through art and music. My youngest is blessed to have Mrs. [Susan] School who is piloting the district’s new reading program; she is an amazing professional whom I respect and admire; my youngest looks forward to school every day! Lastly, when I contacted the principal, Mr. [Robert] Whitaker, to resolve a bullying issue — he stepped in right away and resolved it within the day. He is an approachable leader and continues to champion our student safety. We are blessed to have an amazing school staff, and I’m proud to be part of a community where we sacrifice and invest in our future the way our predecessors did for us.
