Relay For Life appreciates support
To the editor:
Relay For Life Green in its 12th year was a great success. Every dollar raised (we are nearing 30K and counting) is a step to a cure and support for cancer victims and their families. Akron General Medical Center (AGMC) Lifestyles Green was once again a gracious and generous host to Relay. Everything from maintenance to facility arrangements and total use of the facilities was a blessing and benefit to our event. The event kicked off with survivor registration, then on to opening ceremonies [with] a flag presentation by Summit County Sheriff Mounted Patrol, [the] national anthem performed by Caity Welsh, survivor testimonials by Angela Bozik and Chrissi Bolin, and the NEO Silverbacks Football Team and 8 Count Dance Studio students escorting and cheering on the survivors for their first lap.
The survivor dinner was donated and provided by: The West Side Bakery of Green, The Bistro in Green and Legends Bar and Grill in Green. This dinner is attended by all of the survivors and their caregivers. Wal-Mart and Giant Eagle [Market District] also provided beverages and all serving plates, cups and utensils for this.
Saturday morning began with Relay For Life’s first ever 5K, with the top two male and female winning prizes. Following the 5K, Giant Eagle provided a delicious omelet station breakfast and also included pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice for all who were there.
Following the breakfast, as people were still on the track walking beginning at 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., was Pizza Wars! Hungry Howie’s, Giuseppe’s, Romeo’s, Ci Ci’s, East of Chicago, Giant Eagle and Pizza Hut were all participants of this annual event. Normally, we have Pizza Wars in February or March, but due to the awful weather at that time, we had to reschedule it. Next year, it will be separate once again because it is such a well-attended event. Each of these restaurants donated seven large pizzas to Pizza Wars and also provided delivery. Each owner was excited to donate these items as well as wish us success. The winner of Pizza Wars was Giuseppe’s, with a close second [by] Romeo’s and Hungry Howie’s third. The most important message here is that it was all close! The West Side Bakery of Green also provided desserts for this event as well as the survivor dinner, and Giant Eagle and Wal-Mart donated beverages and plates again also. Best Cuts of Green received a huge donation of water and soda from Smucker’s for their fundraising, and they also gave us their leftovers for our lunch. All of the leftover beverages were donated to the Green Fire Department.
AGMC Lifestyles donated two-day family passes, [lip balm] and air fresheners to our survivor bags; Giant Eagle donated $5 gift cards; and Nectar Juice and Smoothie Restaurant donated half-off smoothie [coupons].
We don’t want to forget our corporate sponsors, FedEx Custom Critical and Integrated Wealth Management Inc. There are many more donors that gave generously to our teams. We will shout out to them also once our teams have turned in their lists.
We are so grateful to the City of Green, community members and local businesses who gave so much of their time, generosity and donations. Please visit our website for more information and further events taking place this summer to benefit our Relay.
