SOUTH AKRON — Local children were among those who enjoyed the thrill of the hill at Derby Downs June 2 in the annual Greater Ohio Area Super Kids Classic.

Prior to racing fun, the event began with a parade, shown at right top.

Participating racers were between 8 and 18 years old, according to Super Kids Classic officials. Specially designed tandem cars allowed racers to be assisted by youths who compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby and who pilot the cars.

Shown at left bottom is Alayna Flack, a Preston Elementary School student, after her run.

Shown at right bottom is Bryce Swartz, a Norton High School student, being held by Greater Akron Motorcycle Club member Pat Kenney, and his mother, Beth, at the race.

Shown at left top crossing the finish line are Emily Phillips, a St. Vincent-St. Mary High School student, and her co-pilot.

According to Super Kids Classic officials, the Greater Ohio Area Super Kids Classic Inc. is a nonprofit organization that believes all children deserve the opportunity to race down the hill at Akron’s Derby Downs. The group organizes the annual race for children with disabilities.
