GREEN — The Green Professionals Association’s (G.P.A.) second annual 5K Turkey Trot and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is set to take place Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day.

The event raises scholarship funds for Green High School seniors and other G.P.A. activities, according to G.P.A. Treasurer Jennifer Borowy, assistant vice president and branch manager of the Massillon Road branch of PNC Bank.

Established in 2012, the G.P.A. is a nonprofit organization consisting of 20 members (to date) that are dedicated to giving back to the community through mentorships, scholarships and community service projects while furthering members’ professional careers through an interdisciplinary approach to education, networking and overall professional growth, according to Borowy.

The organization’s first three scholarships were awarded to: Erika Rector, $3,000; Maryssa Beasley, $2,000; and George Moresea, $1,000.

Funds for those awards were raised from last year’s inaugural race, which drew 625 runners/walkers from 10 different states and raised more than $10,000, according to Borowy.

“We had a great turnout for our first year — far more than we expected,” said Borowy. “We had a good mix of people, from dedicated runners to families, with some even dressing up in turkey costumes.”

The event, which lasts about one-and-a-half hours, gives families an opportunity to exercise together before sitting down to a big meal, with lots of time left to enjoy family Thanksgiving activities, Borowy added.

This year, those who bring an item for a canned food drive will receive a free raffle ticket for prizes such as pumpkin pies, a wine basket, yoga gift certificates and more. Drawings for raffle prizes take place during the winners’ awards presentations.

The race/walk will start off from the Green Central Administration Building and finish off at the Green Memorial Stadium, located behind Green Intermediate School at 1737 Steese Road.

The 1-mile event will start at 7:30 a.m., and the 5K event will begin at 8 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for the top three males and females in each age category, as well as the top three males and females overall in the 5K.

Prizes also will be awarded to the top four finishers in the 1-mile Fun Run.

Age brackets are: 14 and under, 15-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70 and up.

The cost is $25 for those who preregister and $30 on race day for the 5K, and $10 for the Fun Run.

All preregistered participants will receive a free T-shirt, but they are not guaranteed for race-day registrations. Registration packets may be picked up Nov. 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. or Nov. 28 at 6:30 a.m. from the concession stand area of the stadium.

To preregister for the event, visit www.green-professionals-association.org.

Parking will be available in front of the stadium only: School parking lots will be closed that day. Parking for participants and visitors arriving after 7:20 a.m. will be directed to Town Park Center.
