Walsh ‘Showcase’ scores $8,100 for cancer research

Dr. Brad Pohlman, director of the hospital’s Lymphoma Program and medical director of the Scott Hamilton CARES initiative, is shown at right second from left as he accepts the donation. Helping present the gift were, shown from left, Walsh head coach Chris Kaczmar; assistant coach John Ventura, who was treated by Pohlman during his 2004 bout with cancer; and the Rev. Mike Marco, S.J., president of Walsh Jesuit.
Originally called “Baseball Junior Day,” Kaczmar reformatted the event in 2006 after a number of parents and relatives connected to the school’s baseball program were diagnosed with cancer. Known today as “Showcase for the Cure,” the nonprofit event is dedicated to raising awareness about cancer and making a donation toward cancer research. Kaczmar said it continues to attract the area’s top baseball players, as well as more than 40 college and professional scouts from organizations throughout the Midwest.
