Fifth annual swim meet honors local swimmer

DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Summit Special Olympic Athletic Club, an Ohio-sanctioned Special Olympics program founded by Summit County parents of people with developmental disabilities, hosted the fifth annual Brooke McMahan Memorial Invitational Swim Meet Nov. 21 at the Ocasek Natatorium.

Brooke McMahan, daughter of Chris McMahan and Kim Hone-McMahan and a 1999 graduate of Green High School, was a member of the Summit Special Olympic Athletic Club for many years before her sudden death in July 2003. The swim meet was held in honor of her memory. Shown at riht middle talking about the importance of the event is Alex McMahan, Brooke’s brother. Standing next to him, from left, is his sister Jennifer and mother, Hone-McMahan. 

Billy Soule, assistant to the mayor of Akron for community relations, opened the event by saying the Special Olympics oath. He is shown at right top saying the oath with Ann Marie Denning, of Cuyahoga Falls. 

More than 100 athletes and coaches from Summit, Stark, Medina, Portage and Columbiana counties participated in the swim meet.

In addition to traditional competitive swimming strokes, kick-board, dog paddle and water polo ball relays took place. Swimmers also took part in a stroke and technique clinic with swimmers from Firestone High School and college swimmers.
