Billy Soule, assistant to the mayor of Akron for community relations, opened the event by saying the Special Olympics oath. He is shown at right top saying the oath with Ann Marie Denning, of Cuyahoga Falls.
More than 100 athletes and coaches from Summit, Stark, Medina, Portage and Columbiana counties participated in the swim meet.
In addition to traditional competitive swimming strokes, kick-board, dog paddle and water polo ball relays took place. Swimmers also took part in a stroke and technique clinic with swimmers from Firestone High School and college swimmers. Shown at right bottom is Terrance Tarpley, 11, of Akron, working with University of Akron (UA) swim team members Julia Gregos, at top, and Jacquie Paumier.
Shown at left is Rachel Parker, left, of Springfield, working with UA swim team member Cathryn Collins, of South Carolina, during a clinic.
