Debutantes selected for ‘Les Belles Perles’ cotillion

DOWNTOWN AKRON — The Akron Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. selected 17 young women, shown at right, to participate in its 30th Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Fundraiser called “Les Belles Perles” (“The Beautiful Pearls”). The cotillion will take place Feb. 21 at The University of Akron’s Quaker Station, 135 S. Broadway St.

The 2011 debutantes are seniors at area high schools in Greater Akron. The 2011 debutantes and their schools are: 

• Akron Early College High School: Jabree Gordon;

• Buchtel High School: Tia Hicks-Barnes, Jesekah Riley-Bell and Shanika Shropshire;

• Copley High School: Amber Cobb;

• Ellet High School: Cidney Lett;

• Firestone High School: Joanne Burney, Bria Cooke, Jocelyn Hopper, Miryam Johnson, Wintre Ward and Ashlyne Wilson;

• Garfield High School: Montè Thornton;

• Kenmore High School: Annitra Lewis;

• Nordonia High School: Dornice Friday;

• North High School: Shawatha Covington; and

• Norton High School: Korinne Edwards.

The debutantes were selected based on their overall academic performance in high school; school and community involvement; and letters of recommendations submitted on their behalf, according to Sorority officials.

Tickets for the presentation are $55 and may be purchased from any debutante. The deadline for the purchase of tickets is Jan. 29.
