COPLEY — Spring Garden Waldorf School (SGWS) raised more than $40,000 for its school gardening program this school year. Investments from community and professional organizations, faculty, parents and charitable foundations have funded the construction of a new greenhouse, a garden coordinator and needed vegetation and other supplies, according to school officials. The Summit County Farm Bureau plowed six rows this spring and students planted kale, peas, cabbage, peppers, tomatoes, squash, beans, lettuces, marjoram, basil, thyme, sage and a pumpkin patch.

SGWS actively fosters naturalistic intelligence in its students, according to school officials. This intelligence, one of eight defined by Harvard educator Howard Gardner, is defined as being in tune with nature and able to explore the environment, find patterns and easily categorize differences. Science education is multi-disciplinary when approached through outdoor exploration, and opportunities to teach other subjects like math are also explored through tending rows of categorized plants.
