Voters will vote for one candidate for Medina County recorder for the term commencing Jan. 1, 2013, on the Nov. 6 General Election ballot. The information provided below was submitted by the candidates, with their responses to our questions printed as submitted.

Jill Bell

Political affiliation: Democrat

Why are you running for Medina County recorder?

“I am professional, positive and energetic. In addition to a degree in Paralegal Studies and having been a small business owner, I bring 20 years experience in the legal and real estate fields working with documents and Recorder’s offices throughout the State. I do not take running for this office lightly. Long before the opportunity to be on the November ballot arose, I had researched other Recorder’s offices around the State. I was amazed at the services being offered in other counties but not here in Medina. As Medina County Recorder, I can and will change that.”

What would be your top three priorities if you took office? Why?

“First, I will identify and implement the changes necessary to make access to the office more convenient for the public it serves. The recorder’s office isn’t just about recording property records that must happen before 4 p.m. People need the records for research. If I can make access easier for people working 9 – 5 jobs by staying open into the evening a few days a month or a Saturday morning with staff available to assist them, I’m going to do that. I will immediately investigate how to make available online the documents that do not include private identity information. I will initiate a ‘Good Deeds’ program seeking the cooperation of our local Bar Association, Title Offices and Realtors to ensure the residents of Medina County have the opportunity they deserve to avoid costly probate transfers. Like our Auditor, Mike Kovack, does so well, I will reach out to residents with a newsletter and a much needed user friendly overhaul of the Recorder’s Office website.”

Colleen Swedyk (incumbent)

Political affiliation: Republican

Why are you running for Medina County recorder?

“I feel that I have successfully run the Recorder’s Office for the last six years. During these times of reduced taxpayer dollars, I know that I have the experience and ability to ensure that the Recorder’s Office continues to run on less funds. Fiscal responsibility is always a priority for me. I know that if re-elected, I will continue to operate the Recorder’s office responsibly and successfully.”

What would be your top three priorities if you were re-elected? Why?

“Fiscal responsibility would be a top priority. I take pride in knowing that I am responsible in spending each and every dollar from the taxpayers. I have successfully reduced office expenses by over 35% and will continue to strive for more savings. Second, continue to manage quality customer service. The Recorder’s Office is a service to the community and great customer service is always a priority. Third, successfully manage the installation of a new software system that will improve computer operations and create a new work flow that will improve service.”
