Tom Miller
Voters will vote for one candidate for Medina County sheriff for the term commencing Jan. 1, 2013, on the Nov. 6 General Election ballot. The information provided below was submitted by the candidates, with their responses to our questions printed as submitted.

John Detchon

Political affiliation: Democrat

Why are you running for county sheriff?

“I have trained my whole career for this job. It is the next natural step in a 32 year career of serving Medina County.”

What would be your top three priorities if you took office? Why?

“Flatten the administration of the office. Currently we have two chief executives making $80,000 plus. We can’t afford that. I will eliminate the Chief Deputies position and become a true working sheriff, thereby freeing up money to hire two or more corrections officers to reopen a jail pod that has been closed for three years.

“Install a program called P.I.P, Performance Improvement Plan, it entails moving away from subjective personnel evaluation to objective performance rating.

“Blending the business management model with the law enforcement management model to make sure everything we do is safe, effective, and efficient.

“It’s obvious we need to learn to do more with less while still providing the service that the citizens expect. The plan listed above is designed to do that.”

Tom Miller

Political affiliation: Republican

Why are you running for county sheriff?

“Working at the Sheriff’s Office has helped me realize the complexities of the office. I’ve worked as second in command at the Medina Sheriff’s office for about a decade. I would be an honor to lead the men and women of the Medina Sheriff’s Office as it prepares for the challenges of continued budget constraints and the loss of quality officers to retirement.”

What would be your top three priorities if you took office? Why?

“1. A review of the command structure to include resource responsibility allocation.

“2. A performance assessment of services through community input.

“3. A restructuring of the hiring process to be as inclusive and competitive, based on qualifications for the position applied for.

“Why? Like all government agencies the Sheriff’s office will continue to face ongoing budgetary challenges.  The Sheriff’s Office provides services and belongs to the citizens and communities of Medina County. Their collective input will be invaluable in determining priorities of the Medina Sheriff’s Office. Salaries are the largest portion of the budget. There should be equal opportunity for the most qualified individuals that have a passion for criminal justice to work at the Medina Sheriff’s Office. Quality personnel have the greatest impact on the success of any organization including the Medina County Sheriff’s Office.”
