Akron police captain honored by Sons of Italy

NEWARK — The Grand Lodge of Ohio, Sons of Italy in America recently awarded Akron Police Capt. Paul Calvaruso the State of Ohio 2013 Law Officer of the Year award. The award was presented at the evening gala event at the Cherry Valley Lodge during The Sons of Italy biennial state convention.

Calvaruso is a 28-year veteran of the Akron Police Department. He is currently a captain in the Uniform Sub-Division. He advanced through the ranks to his current position, where he oversees five patrol shifts and approximately 200 officers and supervisors, according to the Sons of Italy.

Calvaruso was raised in the North Hill area of Akron, graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School and attended The University of Akron, where he received a degree in accounting. According to Sons of Italy officials, Calvaruso is the son of an immigrant and has embraced the Italian culture and serves as an excellent example of an outstanding Italian-American Law Enforcement Officer.

He is a graduate of the Law Enforcement Foundation’s Police Executive Leadership College, Certified Law Enforcement Executive Program and Leadership Akron Class XXI. He also successfully completed the FBI National Academy.

Tomasina Elavsky and Capt. Dan Zampelli nominated him for the award. Elavski is a trustee for the Sons of Italy, Akron Lodge. Zampelli is an officer in the Akron Police Department. He also is a member of the Akron Lodge and a former recipient of the Law Officer of the Year Award.
