GREATER AKRON — Senior Independence’s We Honor Veterans program honored their patients who are veterans of U.S. Armed Forces and the nation’s fallen soldiers this past Memorial Day, May 27. The organization’s veteran volunteers placed a wreath at the Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park in Clinton on behalf of their veteran hospice patients and adult day center participants. Hospice volunteer Warren Phillips is shown above with the wreath at the park where it was placed.

Following the wreath presentation, the volunteers visited hospice patients and adult day center participants to present them with framed photos of the wreath that was placed at the park. Shown at right is Senior Independence client Willie Baxter, seated, holding the framed photo, and from left, John Sommer, David Wilson and Ed Sauer. Wilson is the hospice volunteer coordinator, and Sommer and Sauer serve as volunteers, according to Senior Independence officials.

The We Honor Veterans program is a national collaboration of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs. In the We Honor Veterans program, hospice staff members are trained to care for the unique health needs of veterans, according to program officials. Patients are honored for their service through pinning ceremonies, in-home Veterans’ Day celebrations and veteran-to-veteran companionship visits, and the community is engaged in giving recognition to the veterans, program officials added.
