Robert Kelly (incumbent) vs. Dan Petek (incumbent) vs. Diane Thomas (incumbent) vs. Christopher Wolny

Voters living in the Highland Local School District will vote for three candidates for Highland Local Schools Board of Education in the Nov. 5 General Election. The race is nonpartisan. The information provided below was submitted by the candidates, with their responses to our questions printed as submitted. Candidate Christopher Wolny did not respond to our request for information by the stated deadline.

Robert Kelly (incumbent)

Why are you running for a seat on the Highland Local Schools Board of Education?

“It has been an honor to represent Highland taxpayers over the past 16 years. Highland voters passed our most recent levy in very tough economic times. One of my primary goals is to help stretch our operating levy dollars out as many years as possible while continuing our pursuit for continued academic success.”

What would be your top three priorities if you were re-elected? Why?

  1. “Continue to emphasize the safety of our students and staff.
  2. “Continue to make responsible cost/benefit spending decisions with taxpayer dollars.
  3. “Continue to set the tone for cutting edge academic success which is critical for today’s students to be successful in tomorrow’s world.”

Dan Petek (incumbent)

Why are you running for a seat on the Highland Local Schools Board of Education?

“The primary reason for my desire to keep a seat on the Highland School Board, is I believe we still have more work to do. There is a terrific and effective leadership team currently in place at Highland. This team not only has a strong passion and commitment to the kids and their families that live here, but the experience and knowledge on how to accomplish great things with the limited resources we have. The years that I have served on the Board have left me both honored and humbled with the responsibility of being a part of this Team. This responsibility has driven me to be even more determined to accomplish greatness on the behalf of those who have entrusted me with the stewardship of our wonderful school district.”

What would be your top three priorities if you were re-elected? Why?

  1. “Saftey of our students
  2. “Provide the Highest level of Education for our Students
  3. “Improve our Buildings ( or replace them) and build a new athletic complex”

Diane Thomas (incumbent)

Why are you running for a seat on the Highland Local Schools Board of Education?

“I have been blessed by living in the Highland district these past 14 ½ years and I believe in giving back through serving my community. An essential component of a strong community is an excellent school district, which requires leadership and commitment. My 3 years of BOE experience combined with my long history of volunteering in the schools and community, my advanced education and my business background make me an excellent candidate to continue serving on the BOE.”

What would be your top three priorities if you were re-elected? Why?

“My desire always has been to continue to build a healthy collaborative partnership between the parents, district employees, and the community at large. We will be presented with such an opportunity soon. All of our buildings are currently undergoing an official comprehensive audit by the state. We have been promised the results by the beginning of 2014. During the first quarter of 2014, the BOE is planning to roll out the results from this audit, combined with data on the current condition of our athletic facilities, to the community for input and the subsequent development of a district-wide action plan. I look forward to helping to make this process as transparent and as inclusive as possible and helping to engage our community in determining the future of our district.”
